This group plans and oversees the annual conference that seeks to increase the interaction of the various organizations involved in the health and safety of the community – EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement, Hospitals and other support services. The committee’s main roles are:
The STEP Council of the Genesee Region’s History and Archives committee managed the Emergency Medical Services collection housed at the Rochester Medical Museum & Archives located at the Rochester Academy of Medicine. The committee worked with EMS organizations in the region to collect, catalog, and organize historical information and equipment that reflect the development of pre-hospital care in the region. Additionally The committee developed and created historical exhibits to educate the community about this important history.
From the first volunteer fire companies to the present highly skilled Emergency First Responders, the development of emergency services and pre-hospital care continues to play an important part in modern life.
The History and Archives committee worked with educators from Monroe Community College’s EMS training program at the Public Safety Training Center, a regional emergency training complex for police, fire and emergency medical personal that features state-of-the-art aircraft/ burn buildings, crime scene, firing range and TEAM/TAC training simulators,. Students can learn EMS history through an exhibit in the PSTC’s front lobby which includes antique equipment from the early days of EMS.
The History and Archives committee produced an oral history video interviewing prominent members of the EMS community. These Oral Histories catalog the development of the local EMS services through personal experience and provide an important historical resource in scholarly research.
The History and Archives committee is currently inactive.
Additional temporary committees are set up as STEP takes on new projects.
