At the June NYS SEMAC & SEMSCO meetings, several changes were made to the NYS BLS ALtered Mental Status Protocol.

The changes include:

  1. Clarification of the title of the protocol.
  2. Change in blood glucose threshold from 80 to 60 for adult and pediatric patients.
  3. Relative contraindications as opposed to “exclusion criteria” for the administration of naloxone.
  4. The addition of pediatric dosages of naloxone.

The update protocol will be added to the NYS DOH website soon.  However, the use of nalozone had been approved previously for BLS and the pertinent policy can be found at htthe tp://
