Celebrating STEP's 50th

Board members Sue Breese, Elsie Glenndenning, SueAnn Casper (President), Barb Ackroyd, Sharon Chiumento (Vice-President), Dave Kluge, Tom Bonfiglio, Michael Pollock, Hugh Franklin (Treasurer), Bob Faugh, and Ray Casper celebrated STEP's 50th anniversary June 21st at Oak Hill Country Club.  Melodie Kolmetz (Secretary) and Aaron Horowitz (Assistant Treasurer) were unable to attend.  The annual meeting held after dinner reviewed the past year's activities and briefly discussed upcoming plans.

STEP Celebrates its 50th Anniversary!!

STEP celebrated its 50th anniversary tonight at its annual dinner at Oak Hill Country Club at which the following proclamation was read.  

Note: Although STEP did EMT classes and CPR training for physicians and dentists in its early days, but no longer is involved at that level, it still is a major contributor to EMS education through its annual conference which this year was held March 30th-April 1st.

2017 STEP Conference!

The 2017 STEP Conference program held March 30th - April 1st was a big success!  


STEP Conference Registration Now Open

2017 is the 50th anniversary of STEP, and the Board of Directors is excited to kick off the celebrations with the 2017 STEP Conference. The conference will be held March 31st & April 1st, with a preconference on March 30th at the Hilton Garden Inn at College Town, 30 Celebration Drive, Rochester, NY 14620. Our speakers this year come from a variety of backgrounds in the EMS, Fire, Law Enforcement & Hospital sectors, and include national speaker, Connie Mattera, MS, RN, EMT-P,  and NYS DOH EMS Medical Director for Western NY, Dr Gregory Young. Workshops include many topics, from medical and trauma care to therapeutic communications and disaster management.  

Based on feedback from last year's conference, the Friday breakfast has been changed to a hot buffet instead of a continental breakfast, necessitating a $5 increase in the conference price.  Additionally, vegetarian or gluten-free meal options will be available at no additional cost, but this must be indicated on the registration form by the date noted on the registration form.

In celebration of STEP's 50th anniversary, STEP is sponsoring a community-based event on Thursday evening, March 30th to explore ways to decrease the potential for violence in the school setting, with leaders from many venues.  This event will have a limited number of seats available for first responders, so early registration is recommended. (See details on the registration form.)  Additionally, STEP will be coordinating a separate educational opportunity (MeduPrep) with MLREMS sponsorship to prepare paramedics interested in taking certification exams as Specialty Care Transport providers. This course will not be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, but instead in the Shapiro Conference Room adjacent to the MLREMS Office across the parking lot from the HGI.  Information for a separate registration website can be obtained using the contact us link/button above.

STEP Conference Reminder


The STEP Board would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and a healthy, happy 2017!

We would also like to invite you to join us for our 2017 conference which will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn at College Town in Rochester on March 31st and April 1st, 2017 with a preconference on March 30th. Plenary speakers include Dr Greg Young from the NYS DOH, Dr Jeremy Cushman, the MLREMS medical director, Dr Tasshout, a neurovascular surgeon from Rochester Regional Health System, and Connie Mattera, a nurse paramedic who has done presentations at many state and national conferences. 
 There will also be a special two day offering for specialty care transport personnel in conjunction with the Monroe Livingston Regional EMS Council. On Thursday night, March 30th, there will be a unique opportunity for a limited number of attendees to participate with many local community leaders in a workshop, led by Rochester Police Department's School Safety Officer Moses Robinson, discussing the prevention of and response to school-related violence.

STEP Sponsors 'Weekend of Remembrance'


Among STEP’s major initiatives through the years has been an effort to preserve and honor EMS history at the Rochester Medical Museum and Archives, now located at the Rochester Academy of Medicine. In conjunction with those efforts, it seemed to be a natural fit to help honor all those who serve and protect our communities with 3 days of events commemorating the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in NYC. 

Photos bring back many irretrievable memories that can be so easily misplaced, or lost in fires, floods or other disasters. The weekend’s free events provide an opportunity for attendees to restore some of their old photos and preserve their own history.  

The events are open to the general public, but each day highlights a particular group – the medical community on Friday, the military on Saturday, and all first responders on Sunday 9/11.  Details about the events and their sponsors can be found in the event flyer and FAQs below as well as on the event website .



Admission is free and includes:

  • Scan up to 50 photos or slides per person with Kodak Alaris scanners
  • Photo fix up to 10 photos with Vivid-Pix RESTORE software

Learn about the Rochester Medical Community

The Rochester Academy of Medicine was founded in 1900 and has been a place for community service to this day. When the Lyon family donated their house on 1441 East Avenue in 1939, the Academy became a home to educational events, social gatherings and collaborations for generations of physicians from all the healthcare institutions and private practices in the community.

Tour the Rochester Medical Museum and Archives

Housed on the second floor of the Rochester Academy of Medicine, take a tour of medical archives chronicling the history of healthcare in Rochester dating back to the mid-1800s. The gallery consists of temporary and semi-permanent exhibits consisting of medical equipment, uniforms and over 50,000 historic photographs of the people, institutions and local healthcare of Rochester.

The Greece Historical Society, chartered in 1975 by the Board of Regents, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Its purpose is to collect, research and preserve the history of the town of Greece, NY and the local area. The society provides free public programs, exhibits and events, tours, newspaper articles and publications.

Meet Veteran Advocate, Eric Wheeler

Eric Wheeler served in the United States armed forces and is a leading advocate for veterans and their families in the Rochester area. During his two decades of service, he was a member of both the United States Army and Navy Reserves. Eric deployed as a Civil Affairs Sergeant for Operation Joint Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the late 1990s and later as a Staff Sergeant responsible for instructing Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations soldiers in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Eric Wheeler is currently the Interim Director of Veteran Services at Monroe Community College, where he assists veterans’ transition from the armed forces to higher education. He also instructs courses as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Monroe Community College and as an Adjunct Lecturer at Nazareth College. Having performed significant research in the field of military history, Eric has taught undergraduate courses on both World War I and World War II and facilitated a lecture series on modern warfare for the New York Council for the Humanities. He  received an Associate of Science in Liberal Arts from Monroe Community College and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in History, a Master of Arts in American History, and a Master of Public Administration, all from the State University of New York, College at Brockport. He is proud to volunteer for a number of local veterans’ organizations—including the Veterans Business Council where he is a member of the Board of Directors, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), and the One Team, One Fight initiative.

Learn about Henrietta Ambulance History

For the past 50 years, Henrietta Ambulance has served the residents and commuters within the Town of Henrietta and surrounding communities. The organization was founded in 1962 by a group of residents who decided that the ambulance response time from the City of Rochester was too great. At that time medics were required to have only American Red Cross First Aid training.

Today Henrietta Ambulance operates a fleet of 10 vehicles and has about 60 personnel to handle more than 5,900 annual calls for service. The base of operations is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Henrietta Ambulance has a career staff of full-time, part-time and per diem EMTs and paramedics in addition to its volunteers.
